The Surge Coil is one of the most impactful utility items in ARC Raiders, especially for players who prefer smart positioning and defensive control over pure aggression. When used correctly, it can lock down choke points, punish ambushes, and even disrupt large ARC enemies during chaotic fights.
Unlike standard grenades or traps, the Surge Coil behaves more like an automated electric hazard. It rewards planning, map awareness, and timing more than raw aim. Understanding how to obtain it and where it shines in combat is what separates casual use from truly effective deployment.
How to Get the Surge Coil Blueprint
The Surge Coil cannot be bought or crafted directly. Instead, players must find its blueprint in the field and successfully extract it.
Electromagnetic Storm Requirement
The most important condition is the Electromagnetic (EM) Storm map event. The Surge Coil blueprint only appears when this environmental modifier is active.
Before deploying into a raid, always check the top-side map conditions. If there is no EM Storm, the blueprint simply will not spawn.
Loot Everything Industrial
During an active EM Storm, the blueprint enters the general industrial loot pool. This means it can appear in a wide variety of containers, including:
Lockers and storage cabinets
Metal desk drawers (gray and green variants)
Red tool chests
Breakable containers and crates
Loose junk containers like bins and small clutter spots
The key mindset here is volume looting. The blueprint is rare, so efficiency comes from checking as many containers as possible rather than focusing on a single hotspot.
Best Farming Area: Dam Battlegrounds
While the blueprint can technically drop across multiple maps in ARC Raiders, Dam Battlegrounds is widely considered the most reliable farming location due to its dense industrial loot layout.
High-value zones include:
Hydroponic Domes
Research & Administration Building
Testing Annex
Control Tower
These areas contain stacked container density, multiple floors, and frequent loot resets within a single run path, making them ideal for blueprint hunting.
Alternative Reward Method
If RNG farming is not your preference, there is also a guaranteed alternative. The Surge Coil can be obtained as a reward during Step 4 of the “Create Emergency Caches” objective in the Converging Paths Project progression line. This provides three units of the item as a structured reward rather than relying on random drops.
Surge Coil Base Stats
Understanding what the Surge Coil actually does is essential before using it in live combat.
Radius: 10 meters
Damage: 6 damage per second
ARC stun duration: 1.0 second
Raider stun duration: 0.5 seconds
Lifespan: Permanent until destroyed, disarmed, or triggered into destruction after repeated activation
The most important detail is its lack of discrimination. It affects both enemies and allies equally, which makes placement far more important than timing.
How the Surge Coil Works in Combat
The Surge Coil acts like an autonomous electric trap that continuously zaps anything inside its radius. It does not distinguish between players, teammates, or ARC units.
Because of this, it can be both extremely powerful and dangerous if placed carelessly.
Best Ways to Use the Surge Coil
1. Lock Down Extractions and Chokepoints
One of the strongest uses is defensive control during extraction or high-risk looting.
Placing a Surge Coil at:
The top of a zipline
Narrow stairwells
Tight doorway entrances
creates a forced risk zone. Enemies attempting to rush or flank will be instantly stunned, revealing their position and disrupting their attack timing.
This is especially effective for solo players trying to survive ambush-heavy extractions.
2. Hidden Placement Above Doors and Corners
The Surge Coil is fragile and can be destroyed quickly if spotted. Because of that, placement should prioritize visibility denial.
Good placements include:
Above door frames
On high wall corners
Behind cover that still exposes its electrical arc
The goal is to let the trap trigger before the enemy even realizes it is there. Vertical placement is particularly strong because it can hit players as they pass underneath.
3. Control Large ARC Units
Against PvE threats, the Surge Coil becomes a disruption tool rather than pure damage.
Placing it near weak points or directly beneath large ARC enemies allows it to:
Interrupt attack animations
Draw aggro repeatedly
Apply continuous stun pressure
While it won’t melt bosses alone, it creates valuable openings for teammates to deal heavy damage safely.
4. Counter Explosive Pushes
A lesser-known interaction makes the Surge Coil especially useful in defensive holds.
Incoming trigger-based explosives entering the 10-meter radius can detonate prematurely due to electrical interference. This allows players to:
Protect bunker rooms
Block grenade-heavy pushes
Force enemies into unsafe detonation zones
Used correctly, it can completely shut down explosive breach attempts.
5. Avoid Coil Clustering
A critical rule many players learn the hard way is that Surge Coils do not interact safely with each other when placed too close.
If two coils overlap within range:
They will repeatedly trigger each other
Continuous zapping leads to self-destruction
To avoid this, always space multiple coils at least 10 meters apart. When done correctly, you can create a controlled “electric corridor” that punishes movement through an entire hallway or room.
The Surge Coil is not a simple damage trap. It is a control tool that rewards smart positioning and map awareness. In the hands of a prepared player, it can completely reshape fights by controlling space, punishing aggression, and disrupting both enemy players and ARC units.
Whether you are defending a zipline, holding a tight interior, or preparing for extraction, the Surge Coil offers a rare advantage in a game where positioning often matters more than firepower.
